DeLauro Recognizes 50th Anniversary of Food Stamp Act
Will Co-Host ‘Witnesses to Hunger’ New Haven Opening on Thursday
NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Food Stamp Act, which occurred last Sunday. Over 46 million Americans, almost half of them children, use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) in a given year. DeLauro has been a champion for the program throughout her time in Congress and will co-host the opening of New Haven’s ‘Witnesses to Hunger’ exhibit this coming Thursday.
“SNAP is our nation’s most important anti-hunger program. It plays a critical role in ensuring the most vulnerable Americans—including seniors, veterans, children and the disabled—have access to nutritious food. As we recognize the 50th anniversary of the Food Stamp Act, I renew my pledge to champion SNAP, which puts money back into local economies, lifts millions of Americans out of poverty and puts food in children’s bellies so they can learn and grow up to be strong, successful adults.
“I was moved by the ‘Witnesses to Hunger’ exhibit in Washington earlier this year and I am honored to be able to bring it to New Haven on Thursday. Nothing is more powerful than talking with mothers who struggle to feed their children and seeing the visual evidence of their daily struggles. Their stories should move us all.”
‘Witnesses to Hunger’ is part of a national research and advocacy project featuring original photography and first-hand accounts from parents who have experienced hunger and poverty. Baltimore, Boston, Camden and Philadelphia have previously been featured. The opening reception will be held this Thursday, September 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the New Haven City Hall Atrium Area.
