DeLauro Recognizes the 83rd Anniversary of the Social Security Act

August 14, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC (August 14, 2018) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today marked the 83rd Anniversary of President Franklin Roosevelt Signing the Social Security Act into law. Social Security is one of the nation's most effective and critical programs, providing seniors and families with a stable source of income and lifting 22 million seniors out of poverty each year.

"Social Security no longer stretches as far as it once did. More and more seniors are retiring without a private pension, and are counting on Social Security to carry the share of their retirement income. When Social Security does not keep up with the cost of living, or modern economic challenges, seniors are robbed of their dignity and independence," said DeLauro. "We must reform Social Security and its funding to make it less stingy and ensure it is able to help those need it."

"Unfortunately, President Trump and Republicans in Congress seem intent on destroying these programs. The President's budget would cut $64 billion from Social Security, targeted directly at disabled Americans. Moreover, House Republicans passed a bill earlier this year to repeal the Affordable Care Act and cut more than $800 billion from Medicaid," continued DeLauro. "At a time when Americans struggling with stagnant incomes and a lack of good-paying jobs, President Trump and Congressional Republicans' proposals would make things even worse."
