DELAURO RECOGNIZES NATIONAL AMERICORPS WEEK

March 16, 2012

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement today in recognition of AmeriCorps Week, which honors the commitment of current AmeriCorps members and alumni and the importance of the program.

AmeriCorps is a national network of service organizations that help to engage Americans in service to meet our education, public safety, health, and environment needs. Over 700,000 people have served in AmeriCorps, reaching and enriching the lives of millions of Americans across the country.

"I am proud to recognize AmeriCorps Week and to honor the incredible work that they do each day. AmeriCorps was designed to give individuals a unique opportunity to give back to their communities. The service of each AmeriCorps member provides benefits to their communities, as well as a sense of pride and personal achievement. In my home state of Connecticut and across the country, the young men and women of AmeriCorps strengthen our communities and make them better places to live, learn, and grow. To put it simply, AmeriCorps works. Unfortunately, AmeriCorps has been threatened by budget cuts in recent years, but I have been proud to fight back and preserve this worthy program. I am so pleased to honor such a valuable program this week, and look forward to their continued good work."
