DeLauro Releases New Report Showing the Republican Tax Law Puts Nearly 200,000 CT Jobs at Risk to Outsourcing

September 21, 2018

NEW HAVEN, CT (September 21, 2018) - Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released a report she requested from the Democratic Staff of United States Joint Economic Committee on the effect of Republican Tax Law on Connecticut jobs. The report found that Republican Tax Law risks the loss of 199,200 Connecticut jobs—from 58 industries—to outsourcing, representing nearly 14% of the state's private sector.

"The Democratic staff of the U.S. Joint Economic Committee recently released a jobs analysis of the Republican Tax Law. The Committee found that the Republican tax law could have a worse effect on American jobs than the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and China combined, with most of these losses coming from outsourcing. Connecticut could lose nearly 200,000 jobs because of provisions of the GOP tax law, amounting to 14% of the state's private workforce and more than the populations of New Haven and West Haven combined."

"It is unspeakable that President Trump and Republicans would advance a tax bill that promotes outsourcing. It is in direct contradiction to their promises to the American people. Families are struggling. Wages are slowing or stagnant. In fact, according to new Census data, earnings for full-time workers dropped last year by 1.1 percent. Meanwhile, health care, housing and child care costs continue to rise."

"According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Connecticut lost more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs since 1994 when NAFTA was enacted and China was allowed to join the WTO. That amounts to nearly 40 percent of the manufacturing jobs in Connecticut."

"That is why earlier this year, I introduced the Close Tax Loopholes That Outsource American Jobs Act. My bill would undo this incentive to outsource, striking the provisions of the tax law that allow for a lowered tax rate abroad. The bill would level the playing field for working families by making corporations pay U.S. taxes at the same rate as companies that keep their facilities and jobs right here in America. It is imperative that we repeal the job killer provision of the GOP tax plan—200,000 Connecticut jobs are at stake."
