DeLauro: Republicans Deny Unemployment Benefits to Nearly 2 Million Americans

November 18, 2010

Washington, DC– Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement today expressing her disappointment at the failure of the House of Representatives to pass the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Continuation Act, H.R. 6419. The bill failed by a vote of 258-154.

"Today's vote means that nearly two million Americans, including 7,200 in Connecticut, who are unemployed through no fault of their own, will see their benefits expire at the end of this month. The extension voted on today would have extended these emergency benefits for a mere three months, through the holiday season and winter months, but instead these families have been left out in the cold. We have a responsibility to provide emergency relief to those who have not been able to find jobs, and today's vote is very disappointing. I will continue to fight for providing unemployment benefits, and look forward to supporting future legislation to help our struggling families."
