DeLauro Responds to Milk Recall

September 9, 2010
Potentially contaminated milk sold in 5 Northeast states including CT

New Haven, CT—Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3), Chairwoman of the FDA and Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement today in reaction to the recall of milk sold in five Northeastern states, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island, that may not have been properly pasteurized. Milk that has not been pasteurized is susceptible to contaminants like listeria and salmonella.

"It has happened again—another food safety recall, this time right in our backyard. Milk, a product so common in American households, has been recalled due to a failure of the very equipment that is supposed to make it safe. Thankfully, so far it appears this problem was discovered early enough to prevent illnesses. It is time for Congress to act on food safety legislation in order to ensure the safety of the basic food items that consumers purchase for their families."
