DeLauro Seeks Support for 3rd District and Statewide Initiatives

December 4, 2009

Washington, DC— In preparation for the 2010 reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act, Congresswoman DeLauro (CT-3) requested authorization to fund the following projects of the Army Corps of Engineers:

• Replacement of the storm-damaged bulkhead along the West River area of New Haven Harbor in West Haven, preventing further erosion and pollution.

• The Quinnipiac River Shore Front Stabilization Project, consisting of bulkhead restorations and storm damage repairs at three locations.

• The North Atlantic Coastal/Marine Management Plan, an innovative strategy to allow the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct regional planning for ecosystem restoration in the North Atlantic region and implement their top-priority projects.

• Upgrade the capacity of wastewater treatment facility in the Mattabassett District, serving seven Central Connecticut communities, to meet state and federal nitrogen removal mandates and improve water quality in the Long Island Sound.

The Water Resources Development Act is a comprehensive water resources law that authorizes studies and projects within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mission areas, including navigation, flood damage reduction, hurricane and storm damage reduction, shoreline protection and environmental restoration. It is reauthorized approximately every two years. The last reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act of 2007 (P.L. 110-114) took place on November 8, 2007.
