DeLauro on Senate Abortion Language Compromise
Washington, DC- Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today released the following statement on the language on abortion included in the Senate health reform compromise:
I am pleased with the Senate's progress on health reform legislation today, and that they are moving towards fulfilling their responsibility to provide quality, affordable health care for all Americans.
We can be sure that today in America, someone is delaying necessary health care for themselves or a family member. Somewhere in America, a cancer patient is going through piles of unaffordable medical bills. Somewhere in America, a senior is skipping a needed prescription because she is stuck in the "donut hole."
In spite of this clear and present need, some in Washington are continuing to scheme, delay, and obstruct this bill. As I have said before, now is not the time for anyone to hold health reform hostage. The only responsible course of action is to continue moving forward.
The language included in the Senate's manager's amendment still raises many questions. I am concerned that it appears to go beyond current law. My colleagues and I on both sides of the aisle have sought to find a middle ground on this contentious issue, and we will keep trying. The manager's amendment released today is the product of tough negotiations and deserves careful review and consideration, and I look forward to working toward a satisfactory resolution in the conference between the House and Senate.
