DeLauro, Slaughter Statement on Need for Enforceable Currency Manipulation Standards in Trade Deals
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) released the following statement today on the need for enforceable currency manipulation standards in trade deals:
“The legislation introduced today by Congressmen Sander Levin and Tim Ryan is a commonsense bill to hold currency manipulators accountable. Unfortunately the Administration has shown no inclination to do so in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Without the inclusion of a strong, enforceable currency manipulation chapter, we face further job loss and slow economic growth. No trade deal is worth the paper it is written on if our partners can so easily get around the agreement by devaluing their currency. Such a provision must be included in every trade agreement.”
Last year 230 members of the House of Representatives and 60 Senators sent letters to the Administration demanding a strong currency manipulation chapter in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Administration officials have since said that there will be no such chapter included in the deal.
