DeLauro Sponsors Resolution to End Domestic Child Sex Trafficking
WASHINGTON, DC (February 1, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) this week introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives calling for an end to domestic child sex trafficking. DeLauro's resolution comes as Super Bowl LI is set to take place in Houston, Texas this week, which will see an increase in sex trafficking surrounding the events.
"As the nation turns its attention to Super Bowl LI in Houston this week, the most widely watched sporting event in America continues to have a dark underside off the playing field. Each year, the Super Bowl becomes a magnet for child sex trafficking, with women and girls across the country being sold for sex and exploited during the event," said DeLauro. "While it's critical we discuss this issue, child sex trafficking does not just take place once a year during the Super Bowl. My resolution calls on Congress and law enforcement officials to continue to raise this issue throughout the year, when thousands of victims are trafficked on a daily basis without the media's spotlight. Together, we can advance smart policies and solutions to end these horrific crimes against America's young girls once and for all."
DeLauro's resolution supports educating local communities on how to protect sexually exploited and trafficked children, helping girls who have been sold for sex, extending existing services to child victims of trafficking, encouraging law enforcement and prosecutorial protocols to treat girls as victims and not criminal, and supporting an end to demand for girls.
