DeLauro Statement on 1.5 Percent Increase in Social Security Benefits

Among The Smallest Changes in Almost 40 Years

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the Social Security Administration's announcement that recipients will see only a 1.5 percent increase in benefits next year. The increase is among the smallest since Social Security began automatically making cost of living adjustments in 1975.

"Today's announcement is proof we should be working to expand Social Security benefits with a cost of living adjustment that meets seniors' unique needs. The last thing we should be doing is cutting benefits, as some have suggested. We have a responsibility, as a nation, to ensure that our senior citizens have a dignified and secure retirement. Social Security is a fundamental part of the social contract that ensures a strong America and has helped keep millions out of poverty.

"I have consistently fought to protect Social Security, a bedrock program for middle class families, and will continue to do so in as we debate America's budget and what we want our future to look like. Our intergenerational responsibility, and our pledge to honor our seniors who have given a lifetime of work, must be protected."
