DeLauro Statement on 37th GOP Attempt to End Preventive Care, Raise Prescription Drug Prices, Keep Millions from Health Insurance

May 16, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) releasedthe following statement today on the 37th time the Republican Majorityhas tried to repeal all or part of the landmark health care reform bill knownas the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

"Today is the 37th time that the Republican Majority hasattempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Welcome to Groundhog Day.

"With high unemployment, struggling families and a fragileeconomic recovery, America is facing real problems. But instead of workingtogether to move forward, this Majority persists in re-litigating the healthcare fight of 2010.

"This is National Women's Health Week, making it aparticularly odd time for the House Majority to hold this vote. Odd becausewomen have the most to lose from an ACA repeal. Insurance companies would beallowed to charge women more for the same coverage as men and could withholdcoverage from women who have had a child or been victims of domestic violence.Coverage for maternity care could erode. Support to help working families buyinsurance would dry up. And women would lose access to the free recommendedpreventive services and screenings that save lives.

"As a cancer survivor I know the value of regular screeningsand preventive care. My ovarian cancer was detected by chance in Stage 1, and Ihave now been cancer-free for 27 years. By repealing the ACA, Republicans woulddeny millions of women that same access, costing lives.

"Three years ago we at long last put women's health on anequal footing with that of her spouse, son, and brother. We should be buildingon that, not turning back the clock."
