DeLauro Statement on Additional 1,556 Families Separated by President Trump
WASHINGTON, DC (October 25, 2019) — Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, released the following statement after the Trump administration admitted to separating at least 1,556 more families than previously known due to its “zero-tolerance” policy.
“The Trump administration’s policy of government-sanctioned child abuse is ongoing and, unfortunately, we are learning more about its far-reaching effects every week. To date, nearly 5,500 families have been separated because of President Trump’s heartlessness and cruelty. The trauma our youngsters have endured is unspeakable, and I will continue to fight for them every single day in the Congress by holding this administration accountable. The Trump administration needs to reunite every single child with their family. They need a plan, and they need to act with urgency. Even that is not enough to undo the pain this Administration has wrought, but it is a first step towards rectifying the stain this policy has left on our nation’s history.”
