DeLauro Statement on the Administration’s Executive Orders on Trade Agreements

January 23, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC (January 23, 2017) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding news that the Administration is formally withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. DeLauro led the movement in Congress to defeat the agreement and she continues to push for new rules of the road for trade agreements in the future.

"Members of Congress worked closely with a coalition of labor, environmental, consumer protection, faith, and human rights activists for more than five years to defeat the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The agreement died from lack of support from Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the opposition of the American people. Today's action underscores what happened last year.

"Going forward, we will hold the Administration accountable for a renegotiated NAFTA that creates good paying middle class jobs that cannot be outsourced, and that raises wages in the U.S. We expect a trade policy that expands access to affordable medicine, safeguards our food supply, and protects the environment.

"This is the standard to which we held the last Administration, and we will demand a comprehensive, new approach to trade policy under this Administration. The President cannot change the direction of our nation's trade policy without the support of Congressional Democrats."
