DeLauro Statement Ahead of Seventh Anniversary of Sandy Hook Shooting
WASHINGTON, DC — (December 13, 2019)Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement ahead of the seventh anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
"Seven years ago, we bore witness to an unspeakable massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary. We lost 26 beautiful souls on that cold December day—and nothing has been the same since. We can never make those who lost a child, a sibling, or a parent whole again, but their enduring strength is what keeps me going to stop the gun violence epidemic. Earlier this month, I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with students who attended Sandy Hook Elementary during the shooting as we advocated for stronger gun violence prevention policies. Their courage and commitment is unparalleled, and no one is going to be able to stand in their way."
"This year, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan expansion of background checks, which would help keep guns out of the wrong hands. I have also continued to call for funding for gun violence prevention research, as well as a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The gun lobby and Senate Republicans have stonewalled our efforts, but we will never give up. We have a moral obligation to honor those killed in Newtown with action, and we will enact legislation that saves lives no matter how long it takes."
