DeLauro Statement Applauding the Demise of Graham-Cassidy ACA Repeal But Warning of the Need to Remain Vigilant

September 27, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC -Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement regarding the failure of Senate Republicans to bring the Graham-Cassidy healthcare repeal bill to the floor.

"The American people have made their voices heard: the Affordable Care Act is a vital part of our social safety net, and we will not give it up without a fight" saidDeLauro. "We need a country and a healthcare system that works for the middle class and the vulnerable, not just the wealthy and those with the most lobbyists."

"Graham-Cassidy was the latest in a series of Republican assaults on our healthcare system. It was not just about repeal it was amazingly about eliminating Medicaid as a commitment to seniors, disabled kids, and the most in need. But its defeat should not make us complacent. Now is the time to focus all our energy on strengthening and defending the Affordable Care Act. We should pursue premium stabilization, cost sharing, and lowering the price of prescription drugs."

"I know that the Trump Administration and the Republican controlled Congress will continue to do everything possible to sabotage of the Affordable Care Act. Look what they have done so far, they cut $90 million from advertising and outreach, reduced the amount of time consumers can buy plans on the marketplaces, cut $523 million from the CMS budget to undermine the administration of the ACA, and included a partisan rider that blocks the implementation of the ACA. This administration continues to play politics with people's lives and it will not stop because Graham-Cassidy was defeated."
