DeLauro Statement on “Cynical and Reckless” Republican Funding Bill
Would Leave American People Hurting In Tough Economic Times
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement on the "Continuing Resolution" passed by the House of Representatives today. DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services and Education.
"I strongly oppose this cynical and reckless bill, which is neither a serious nor a good faith effort to address the fundamental responsibilities of government. Instead, the Majority wants government to be broken and unable to address real problems. Ultimately, this bill is designed to do nothing less than send us straight into a government shutdown.
"The deep and dangerous cuts in this bill threaten the health, well-being and future of American families. More children would be pushed out of Head Start, putting them at a lifelong disadvantage. Lifesaving biomedical research that provides us with the opportunity to save people's lives would be cut. Every single national priority would suffer: food safety, transportation, the court system, the list goes on.
"And we should probably not be surprised that Republicans are once again trying to derail the Affordable Care Act and deny quality, affordable health care to millions of families and children. That historic legislation is the law of the land, but the Majority wants to stop it by not providing the money to fund it. The American public has said loud and clear that they do not want it repealed. Republicans need to stop playing games and get over it.
"Congress should stop trying to make things worse for the American public and get to work creating jobs and growing the economy.
