DeLauro Statement on Death of Tyre Nichols

January 29, 2023

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released a statement after the city of Memphis released video footage of the confrontation between police officers and Tyre Nichols that led to Nichols’ death.

“The video showing the brutal beating of Tyre Nichols is horrifying, violent, and shameful. Tyre was only 29 and had so much life ahead of him.

“I applaud the Memphis police chief and the district attorney for acting very quickly in this case. The officers involved in this case have already been fired for their involvement and charged with second-degree murder. Those responsible for Tyre’s death must be held accountable.

“I join with the Tyre’s family and loved ones in mourning his needless death. I must echo the calls made from his mother and family – if you protest, protest in peace. Tyre did not stand for violence, and we must honor this.

“Too many unarmed Black Americans face the risk of violent confrontations with police. We obviously need much more reform and training as we bring a greater commitment to granting communities police resources that make communities safer.

“Stay safe, and again, please remain peaceful to honor the memory of Tyre.”
