DeLauro Statement on Departure of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg

February 5, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the departure of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. DeLauro is a former chairwoman of the subcommittee responsible for funding the FDA, and still serves on that subcommittee.

“Commissioner Hamburg has had a distinguished tenure as FDA Commissioner, making strides in several areas of public health. Chief among these is a strong final rule on menu labeling standards required by the Affordable Care Act. Under her leadership, the FDA also took steps to protect children from e-cigarettes, alert consumers to the dangers of tanning beds and began implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act.

“I look forward to working with FDA Chief Scientist Dr. Stephen Ostroff while he serves as acting commissioner. Continuing to have someone with a public health and science background in charge of the FDA is the right decision and I hope the FDA continues in that vein when choosing a permanent Commissioner."
