DeLauro Statement on Expanded Peanut Butter Recall
Reinforces Needto Implement the Food Safety Modernization Act
NEW HAVEN, CT--Representative RosaDeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today in response to themultistate outbreak of Salmonella infections and the expanded recall ofalmond butter and peanut butter. Twenty nine individuals in 18 states,including three in Connecticut, have become ill with a rare strain ofsalmonellosis. The latest announcement from the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention indicates that peanut butter manufactured by Sunland,Inc. of New Mexico may be the source of this foodborne illness outbreak.
"This latest recall clearly shows thatwe have much to do to improve the safety of our food products," saidDeLauro. "We must implement the Food Safety Modernization Act in a timelyand effective manner so we can better prevent outbreaks from happening in thefirst place. And we have to ensure that the CDC, FDA, and state and localagencies have the resources they need to identify these outbreaks early sowe can prevent additional illnesses."
