DeLauro Statement on Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn Pleading Guilty to Lying to the FBI

December 1, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC (December 1, 2017) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement in response to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleading guilty to charges that he lied to the FBI about his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"Michael Flynn's guilty plea in federal court today is a troubling development in Special Counsel Mueller's investigation into collusion between the Trump administration and Russia. Flynn admitted to lying to the FBI regarding his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak before President Trump took office. In these conversations, Flynn was illicitly engaging with a rival government while President Obama was still in office. More than that, we now know that President Trump wrongly encouraged former FBI Director James Comey to ‘let go' of his investigation into Michael Flynn—an investigation that has now culminated in Flynn's guilty plea."

"This development shows that Special Counsel Mueller's investigation must continue unimpeded from President Trump and the majority in Congress. As Special Counsel Mueller and his team continue following the facts in their investigation, we must not lose sight of the need for an independent commission to investigate Russia's involvement in our electoral processes and develop ways to protect our democracy against future assaults."
