DeLauro Statement on GOP Decision to Abandon Anti-Hunger Programs
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) releasedthe following statement today on the imminent decision of House Republicans toabandon the long-established practice of passing a Farm Bill that supports bothagriculture and anti-hunger programs. DeLauro is a former chair of thesubcommittee responsible for funding the US Department of Agriculture.
"The decision by House Republican leaders to dropanti-hunger programs—most notably food stamps—from the farm bill puts the finalnail in the coffin of the coalition that ensured farmers could make a livingand struggling families could put food on their table. Far from the days of BobDole and Jacob Javits, the current extreme group has done nothing but cutprograms that fight hunger here at home. Further, the bill continues to throwbillions of taxpayer dollars at a crop insurance program that badly needsreform. I hope my colleagues reconsider this decision and bring forward a farmbill that supports both American families and producers."
