DeLauro Statement on International Women’s Day
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement in recognition of International Women’s Day.
“On this International Women’s Day, I cannot help but think of my mother who lived until she was 103. As the child of immigrants, she started working at age 14 and sacrificed all throughout her life so that I could one day have the honor of serving Connecticut in the United States House of Representatives.
“I want to offer thoughts to the billions of women across the world, many of whom are fighting for their lives during a tense time of international crisis. Women in Ukraine are fighting for the independence of their country and their families against tyranny, while women in Iran stand up against draconian laws that stifle their self-expression and humanity. As Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I remain committed to ensuring we do everything within our power to support the brave women across the world who are standing up and demanding change.
“I also am thinking of women like my mother, who worked hard and persevered despite the overwhelming hurdles. I am thinking of the mothers who choose to skip a meal so that their children can eat. I am thinking of the woman who fears of losing her job or pay for the day, and goes to work instead of taking care of her health or that of a loved one. That is why I will never give up in the fight for equal pay for equal work, a permanent, monthly Child Tax Credit, paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, and affordable, accessible, and high-quality healthcare and childcare.
“International Women’s Day is a strong reminder that we must never give up in the fight for equality for all. In the words of my mother: we will not give up, and we will not take no for an answer. I encourage all the world’s women to continue to make their voices heard, and to join me in moving the nation and our world forward.”
