DeLauro Statement on the Labor Advisory Committee Report on TPP

December 4, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC (December 4, 2015)Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today issued the following statement on the Labor Advisory Committee on Trade Negotiations and Trade Policy report that was released regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

"The Labor Advisory Committee has reaffirmed what many of us already know about the Trans-Pacific Partnership: that it is an unfair trade deal that will benefit the wealthiest corporations and individuals, while leaving working men and women to bear the costs of the agreement. We know that the TPP will cost Americans jobs and reduce wages—specifically in the auto, aerospace, aluminum, steel, and textile industries—industries that are at the heart and soul of the American economy. American workers need a trade deal that will work for them, not just for the wealthiest corporations."

The Labor Advisory Committee is comprised of the major American trade unions. The purpose of the report is to advise the Administration on negotiating objectives and bargaining, the operation of a trade agreement once entered into, and other information related to the development, implementation, and administration of the trade policy.

The LAC is required by law to respond to three questions concerning the TPP.

  • Is the agreement in the economic interests of the United States?
  • Does the agreement achieve the principal negotiating objectives? And,
  • Does the TPP provide equality and reciprocity for labor interest?

To all three questions, the answer is "NO."
