DeLauro Statement on Latest Developments in the H1N1 Outbreak
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) issued the following statement on the latest developments in the influenza A H1N1 outbreak
"While concern over the influenza A H1N1 virus has escalated, it is important for people to remain watchful and not panic. Today we learn of three possible cases of H1N1 flu identified in Connecticut, in addition to the tragic death of a 23 month old child in Texas. Our hearts and prayers go out to the child's family.
"Governments from around the globe are working to stay ahead of this outbreak – the World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert to its second-highest level and the United Nations has indicated that all countries should immediately activate their pandemic preparedness plans. Here in the United States, federal officials are also taking critical steps to minimize the reach of this outbreak, as well as regularly briefing Congress and the public. Today Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano came to Capitol Hill to brief the Democratic Caucus and the Republican Conference on what is being done. And as part of the House leadership, I attend daily meetings on this issue.
"Even as we continue to monitor the rapidly evolving developments, it is important to remain calm. Individuals should remain vigilant of their own health and should continue to take common-sense steps to stay healthy, such as frequently washing hands, staying home from work or school if illness is suspected, and seeking appropriate medical attention. I would also encourage employers to be understanding of employees who need time off if they or a dependent feels ill and not penalize them for an absence."
