DeLauro Statement on McDonalds Menu Transparency Announcement
Authored Provision in Health Care Reform Law forEnhanced Transparency
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) releasedthe following statement today on McDonald's announcement they will beginposting calorie counts for items on their menu boards. DeLauro authoredthe provision on menu labeling in the health care reform law that passedCongress two years ago.
"Today's announcement is great news and will enableconsumers to make informed choices. It is no coincidence that, as obesityrates have skyrocketed, Americans have eaten more and more meals outside thehome. In fact, research has shown that not only are many Americans unawareof the recommended calorie intake suggested for healthy living, they have ahard time assessing the calorie level of a fast-food meal.
"Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, moreconsumers will have access to this information. I look forward to seeingmore food establishments move towards enhanced transparency in the comingmonths and years."
