DeLauro Statement on Nomination of Eugene Scalia as Next DOL Secretary

July 19, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC (July 19, 2019) – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, today released the following statement after President Trump announced he would nominate Eugene Scalia to be the next Secretary of the Department of Labor (DOL).

"The Department of Labor is tasked with standing up for American workers through job training programs, combatting wage theft, upholding workplace safety, and ensuring equal pay. That is more important than ever, as working people are in jobs that do not pay them enough to live on. They are struggling to make ends meet with the rising costs of healthcare, prescription drugs, child care, housing, and college. With that in mind, President Trump's nomination of Eugene Scalia to be the next Secretary of Labor entirely misses the mark. Scalia has spent decades working to dismantle worker protections and break apart unions. The next Secretary of Labor should be someone who will fight for workers and reverse the damaging policies and rollbacks of the past two years. Scalia's record suggests he would have no intention of doing that. He is the wrong choice to lead this important Department."
