NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released thefollowing statement today on the passing of Flora "Flo" Consiglio. Flo'shusband founded world-famous Sally's Apizza in New Haven's Wooster Square in1938.
"Flo is a real hero to our family and a hero to hergeneration—those who came to Sally's, Wooster Street and Wooster Square becauseit was the heart of our Italian-American community. Always warm andwelcoming, she was also a tough businesswoman and was never afraid to speak hermind. But she was also an artist, maintaining the distinctive quality ofSally's pizza, a pizza so unique that I had to make sure President Clintonexperienced it—so I sent a pie to Air Force One. Sal Consiglio andmy mom played basketball together when they were kids. My mother's 90thbirthday celebration was held at Sally's and my mother, now at 98, had pizzawith Flo just last month.
"My stepson, Jonathan Greenberg, just opened a pizzarestaurant in Brooklyn, inspired by growing up on Sally's pizza. This is apersonal loss for Stan, myself, and our family. Our thoughts and prayersare with the Consiglio family. Flo was an irrepressible force in a worldin which she made such a difference."
