DeLauro Statement on the Passing of Former Senator George McGovern

NEWHAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statementtoday on the passing of former Senator George McGovern:

"GeorgeMcGovern was a lion of American politics and will be greatly missed. For over ahalf-century, dating back to his appointment as Food for Peace Director in1961, Senator McGovern was on the front lines in the battle against hunger.Senator McGovern's conception of the McGovern-Dole Program in 2000 wasemblematic of the leadership and dedication he showed on anti-hunger andpoverty issues his entire career. I was honored to have received the GeorgeMcGovern leadership award in 2009 and he was the inspiration for so much ofwhat I have worked to accomplish.

"Infact, many years ago I made phone calls for Senator McGovern's presidentialcampaign from the basement of a building in New Haven with a dirt floor. He wasan inspiration then and will always remain one. I mourn his passing andmy thoughts and prayers are with his family in this difficult time."
