May 9, 2013

WASHINGTON,DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement ontoday's FoodAction and Research Center (FRAC) poll showing an overwhelming majority ofthe country supports keeping the food stamp program strong.

"Thispoll is further proof that the overwhelming majority of Americans do notsupport balancing the budget on the backs of the poor and most vulnerable. Withdebate over the Farm Bill about to begin again, I hope my colleagues heed themessage our constituents are trying to deliver. We should bestrengthening programs that help make sure kids across America have enoughfood, not cutting them.

"Further cutting the food stamp program is an unconscionableabdication of our responsibility to care for the neediest among us. Andtoday's poll is proof that the vast majority of Americans agree. Instead ofmaking it more difficult for parents to feed their families we should be takinga look at subsidies to millionaires and reforming our excessive crop insurancesystem."
