DeLauro Statement on President Trump’s Intention to End Birthright Citizenship
NEW HAVEN, CT (October 30, 2018) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement that he will seek to issue an executive order ending the Constitution’s guarantee of birthright citizenship.
“On the merits, President Trump’s announcement that he will try to end the Constitution’s guarantee of citizenship is preposterous. But more than that, Trump’s cynical ploy is to rile up hatred of immigrants as ‘invaders’ and use the politics of fear to drive people to the polls against Democrats. Stoking division for political gain is disgraceful, and it is evil at its core.”
“Just in the past few weeks we have seen the effects of the poisoned political environment he has helped create—from pipe bombs being sent to Democratic leaders around the country to the vicious mass shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. We cannot go on like this. We desperately need moral leadership from our public officials at this painful time, not personal attacks on people and groups.”
“At the same time, Trump’s announcement serves as a distraction from the issues working people and the middle class are focused on—from stagnant wages to the rising costs of healthcare, child care, and housing. President Trump does not have a plan to address these problems, so instead he attacks others. I refuse to be diverted from these issues, and will continue to champion an economic agenda that helps create jobs, raise wages, and lower costs for the people of Connecticut.”
