DeLauro Statement on Report of Serious Concerns with Mexican Labor Reforms

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair-elect of the House Appropriations Committee and a key member of Speaker Pelosi's Trade Working Group, issued the following statement on the Independent Mexico Labor Expert Board's (IMLEB) first report that raises concerns with Mexican labor practices:

"The creation of this first interim report from IMLEB, as required by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, represents an important step of monitoring and evaluating the implementation of Mexico's labor reform and compliance with its labor obligations. The report highlights much of what we already know to be serious issues with the treatment of workers in Mexico and raises concerns that much of what was agreed upon under USMCA, such as the rights of Mexico's workers to unionize and bargain without fear of retaliation, has yet to be implemented.

"Passage of the USMCA was just a small step in raising the standard of living and advancing worker's rights in Mexico. The real work in implementation and oversight must continue. The United States will continue to play a vital role to ensure leaders in Mexico are taking the necessary steps to implement and comply with labor law reforms.

"I look forward to working closely with Katherine Tai and the Biden-Harris Administration to conduct oversight and ensure Mexico upholds its end of the bargain."
