DeLauro Statement on Republicans' Continued Inaction on the Zika Virus
WASHINGTON, DC (August 22, 2016) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement on Republicans continuing to delay acting on the Administration's emergency Zika request, which was made six months ago today on February 22, 2016.
"The Zika virus is a national public health crisis that continues to unfold across the United States and its territories. Since the President made his emergency funding request six months ago, thousands more Americans have contracted the virus, including hundreds of pregnant women. How can we continue to delay acting on this crisis when the American people are suffering and children are being born with devastating birth defects?
"According to the most recent projections, there will be between 100 -270 cases of microcephaly in Puerto Rico by mid-2017. These tragic cases will result in medical costs between $1.0 - $2.7 billion for the affected children and their families, and that is not even counting the cases of microcephaly elsewhere. Due to Republicans' shortsightedness and unbelievable delay, the cost of our inaction will be greater than the cost of the President's initial request.
"Congress must immediately return from this reckless recess, fund a robust response to the Zika virus, and take this public health crisis head on. We cannot delay, cut corners on funding, or fight over this issue any longer. The Zika virus is not only here, it is leaving lifelong, serious consequences for hundreds of children and their families. Speaker Ryan, bring this House back in session now."
