DeLauro Statement on Senate Gun Violence Legislation

March 22, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) releasedthe following statement today regarding the Senate gun violence legislation:

"I am deeply disappointed that proposed legislation banningmilitary-style assault weapons will not be included in the base bill beingconsidered by the Senate soon. That provision--as well as a ban onhigh-capacity magazines--is crucial to preventing future tragedies like theones that happened in Newtown, Aurora, Blacksburg and so many other places.

"Though it will be an uphill battle, I hope people vote withtheir conscience and support the assault weapons and high-capacity magazinebans when they are offered as amendments. Newtown was a tragic turning pointfor America and we must not lose the will to act and prevent other familiesfrom the same pain and suffering."

DeLauro is a co-sponsor of the House legislation banningassault weapons and has introducedlegislation creating a tax credit for people who turn in such weapons tostate or local police.
