DeLauro Statement on Senator Stabenow Decision to Not Seek Re-Election
Congresswoman DeLauro released the following statement in response to an announcement from Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) that she would not seek re-election at the end of her current term.
“First, I want to extend congratulations to my friend and colleague in Congress Senator Stabenow, who has decided that she will not seek re-election at the end of her current term. The Senator has been a dear friend and colleague since we served together in the House of Representatives, where she represented Michigan from 1997-2001. Since then, she has been a force in the Senate – fighting for Michigan’s working and middle-class families, improving mental health services, and protecting natural resources like Michigan’s Great Lakes.
“Through and through, she has shown herself to be an effective legislator that leads with intelligence, charm, and grace. She has been an important partner to me in Congress, fighting for needed investments and policy improvements that advance our work to end hunger and improve nutrition in the United States.
"In her leadership on several Farm Bill reauthorizations, she streamlined more than 100 USDA programs while making historic investment in local food systems. She continues to build on this success by improving food access for families and making permanent investments in ‘Double Up’ bucks, that will help families that receive SNAP benefits purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables. Senator Stabenow has been a consistent advocate in the fight to end hunger.
“I look forward to our continued work together until the end of her term in January 2025. Together we will work to enact important priorities, like passing the next five-year Farm Bill, which determines our nation’s food and agriculture policies.”
