DeLauro Statement on the State of Indiana’s Decision to Terminate Welfare Benefits Privatization Experiment
Washington , D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement on the announcement by the State of Indiana that it is terminating contracts with private companies to automate the application process for food stamps, Medicaid and other benefits.
"I commend the state of Indiana for terminating the contract to privatize the delivery of food stamp benefits and other welfare services. The failures of these privatization contracts in Indiana and Texas should serve as a clear lesson that the administration of critical social services, especially during tough economic times, should not be contracted out to large corporations that are beholden to shareholders and not the American people. I look forward to working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to prevent other efforts to privatize the administration and delivery of food stamp benefits
