DeLauro Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Bump Stocks

June 14, 2024

Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Garland v. Cargill, a case related to the ban of bump stocks, which enable semi-automatic firearms to function like automatic firearms by firing cartridges continuously.

“I am deeply disappointed that the Supreme Court would strike down a policy that would prohibit the use of bump stocks which take already dangerous semi-automatic weapons and turn them into far more deadly automatic weapons. The gunman responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, the 2017 Las Vegas Shooting, used a bump stock so that his semi-automatic weapon would fire in quick succession. Because of this, he was able to fire more than 1,000 rounds that killed 60 people and wounded at least 413.

“This decision is outrageous, dangerous, and will have deadly consequences. I will work alongside my colleagues in Congress to enact the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act, a bill that would give legislative strength to the policy that the Supreme Court struck down today and that would keep these dangerous devices out of the hands of criminals.”
