DeLauro Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Eviction Moratorium

August 27, 2021

NEW HAVEN – House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued this statement after the Supreme Court issued a ruling blocking the Biden Administration from enforcing the CDC's temporary moratorium on evictions:

"Late last night, while our country mourned the loss of United States service members and Afghan civilians, six Republican Supreme Court appointees—three from Trump-McConnell—cleared the way for landlords to throw people onto the street. An estimated 3.5 million Americans will face the threat of eviction. The cruel decision to lift the federal eviction moratorium threatens the lives of countless individuals and families while we see peak COVID-19 cases in many communities across the country.

"Our neighbors and loved ones cannot be left unhoused while the Delta variant rages. We must quickly distribute existing federal funds allocated for rental assistance. As an original cosponsor of Congresswoman Maxine Waters' legislation to extend the CDC's eviction moratorium through the end of this year, we cannot accept a wave of mass evictions.

"There are resources available for landlords and tenants. In Connecticut, we have $450 million in rental and utility assistance available through UniteCT, and landlords must participate in the program as part of the eviction process. So far, the program has paid out $67 million with another $30 million on the way. This is how we cancel rent.

"For those facing eviction in Connecticut you have rights and protections, visit UniteCT. If you or someone you know needs assistance, my team can help: (203) 562-3718."
