DeLauro Statement on Trump Administration Considering Rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership
WASHINGTON, DC (February 28, 2018) – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement on Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's comments that President Trump is considering rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
"The Trans-Pacific Partnership was crafted in secret by hundreds of corporate lawyers to undermine America's sovereignty, accelerate the outsourcing of good paying American manufacturing jobs, and drive down American workers' wages. Rejoining the TPP would have us do more business with several low wage countries that have undemocratic regimes and rampant human and labor rights abuses. It would also limit our ability to protect consumers from dangerous seafood from countries like Vietnam and Malaysia. On top of that, TPP did nothing to curtail currency manipulation, which puts American-made goods at risk."
"In addition, despite numerous campaign promises by President Trump, his Administration has done nothing to hold China accountable for the jobs and wages lost to due to its historic pattern of currency manipulation, nor for its current labor abuses and failure to open its markets to American goods. Now, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin is doubling down on his effort to put the desires of big corporations ahead of working people in this country by trying to drag America back into the TPP—once again betraying President Trump's promises to American workers."
