DeLauro Statement on Trump Administration’s China Enforcement Actions

March 22, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration's enforcement actions on China for stealing our nation's intellectual property.

"For years, I have fought to hold China accountable for its violation of our trade laws. China has systematically stolen our nation's intellectual property with regard to electric vehicles, aviation equipment, and internet services—taking Americans' hard-earned research and development for their own countries' growth. The Chinese government has also engaged in cyberattacks directed at American companies, as well as state-directed acquisition of key American manufacturing and information technology companies. These policies and actions have hurt American workers for decades, and their voices have been absent from our national dialogue for too long. While we do not know if this Administration will follow through, today's proposed measures are the right start and long overdue."

"At the same time, these actions must only represent one part of an overall strategy to ensure that we have an economy that works for everyone. A real, worker-focused agenda should include strong labor standards that are swiftly and fully enforced in a renegotiated NAFTA. It should also eliminate the outsourcing provisions in the recently enacted Republican tax law that further incentivize job losses, and put in place a net benefit review to ensure that foreign investments are not used as a tool by foreign state-owned companies to harm domestic interests. That is why Congress should immediately take up my bill, the Foreign Investment and Economic Security Act (FIESA), to ensure that foreign direct investment does not undermine America's public interests, including our national and economic security. I will continue to fight in Congress to make the Democrats' worker-centric vision for America a reality."
