DeLauro Statement on the Trump Administration’s New Deportation Guidance
WASHINGTON, DC (February 21, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding new guidance from the Trump Administration aimed at deporting more undocumented immigrants.
"Just this week, I visited the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and saw firsthand the struggles that immigrants to the United States face. Migrants to the United States have made the difficult choice to leave their home countries, often out of fear for their lives, to build a better future for their children. For far too long, President Trump has used harmful rhetoric about these immigrants that does not reflect reality.
"The Trump Administration's latest guidance on immigration is not just anti-immigrant, it is also anti-American. Our immigration enforcement should focus on removing dangerous criminals, not breaking up families with raids. Common sense and humanity must come into play in our border control and immigration system, and any policy that separates families is an inhumane policy. Congress should immediately reject the Administration's actions and enact comprehensive immigration reform."
On Monday, DeLauro joined U.S. Representatives Filemon Vela (TX-34), Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15), Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40), and Joe Crowley (NY-14) for an immigration roundtable at La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) in San Jose, Texas. During the event, the Members heard from a number of speakers on legal aid, push factors, immigration reform, and border enforcement.
