DeLauro Statement on Trump’s Pick for Education Department’s Student Aid Enforcement Unit

August 30, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC (August 30, 2017) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump's selection of Julian Schmoke, Jr., a former dean at the for-profit DeVry University, to lead the Department of Education's Student Aid Enforcement Unit. DeLauro is the Senior Democrat on the Appropriations subcommittee responsible for funding the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.

"President Trump continues to fill the Department of Education with people who want to profit from education with the selection for Julian Schmoke," said DeLauro. "Just last year, DeVry University settled a lawsuit with the federal government for $100 million, after it falsely advertised how well its graduates were doing during Schmoke's tenure at DeVry. The Department of Education's main focus must remain giving our nation's children and students the opportunity to thrive—not turning a profit at their expense."
