DeLauro Statement on Trump’s State of the Union Address

February 5, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC (February 5, 2020) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement after President Trump's State of the Union address.

"Over the past year, House Democrats have taken action on a positive agenda for working people and the middle class. The biggest economic challenge of our time is that people are struggling in jobs with stagnant wages that are not keeping up with the rising costs of healthcare, childcare, education, and housing. That is why we have taken on issues families are facing every day, like ensuring women finally get equal pay for equal work, getting big money out of politics, lowering prescription drug costs, reducing gun violence, investing in our nation's infrastructure, expanding the Child Tax Credit, lifting up workers so all workers have access to paid family and medical leave, and sick days, and much more."

"Tonight, President Trump presented little that would help people dealing with any of these issues. Instead, he pushed his divisive agenda. On immigration, his policies have imposed government sanctioned child abuse and forced families into tent camps. On poverty, he left behind one-third of all children from a child tax credit expansion—disproportionately affecting children in rural families, as well as African-American and Hispanic kids. And on healthcare, he tried to distract the public from his efforts to rip healthcare away from people—which hurts Third District constituents like my guest tonight, Kristen Whitney-Daniels of Shelton, Connecticut. Kristen is a type 1 diabetic. As insulin prices have skyrocketed, she has been forced ration her insulin—unsure of how she could afford the medicine that kept her alive. That is heartbreaking, and it is unacceptable. Our elected leaders deserve to be judged by what they are doing to help working people like Kristen. From that perspective, President Trump's time in office has been a failure."
