DeLauro Statement on Trump ZTE Deal

May 25, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC (May 25, 2018)Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement on reports of a deal President Trump made to prop up Chinese cellular company ZTE.

"President Trump promised to protect American jobs, campaigning all over the country and claiming to be all about ‘America First.' Yet, by his own admission, the goal of his reported deal with the shady Chinese cellular company ZTE was to find a way to get them back into business because too many jobs would be lost in China. That is completely unacceptable, and provides further proof that his repeated promises to working people were just more lies."

"Experts inside and outside government agree that ZTE's actions endanger American interests. ZTE violated sanctions by selling sensitive technology to Iran and North Korea, then lied to United States officials about their egregious behavior. That is why the House Appropriations Committee unanimously voted to keep sanctions on ZTE in place, and the full House overwhelmingly passed a defense policy bill that includes a ban on government agencies from doing business with ZTE. Congress needs to step up immediately to protect American workers and our national security. Clearly the President is not."
