DeLauro Statement on United States Airstrikes Killing Iranian Military Leaders

January 3, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC — (January 3, 2020) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement after the United States military conducted airstrikes in Iraq that killed Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani.

"Yesterday's airstrikes against high-ranking Iranian military leaders, including Iranian Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani, are extremely serious. As the leader of the Quds Force, Soleimani was responsible for actions that have harmed and killed American personnel and our allies, and I condemn that."

"The actions authorized by President Trump may have accomplished their tactical objective, but I am deeply concerned by the ripple effects this attack may have by destabilizing the region. The use of lethal force by the United States in the international arena must always be carefully considered—taking into account the potential backlash and harm that may befall our servicemembers, our diplomats, our national security interests, and our allies. In a volatile region where we have seen our embassy attacked in the last week, and where we have deployed additional troops to support our personnel, every action must be carefully considered to ensure that we avoid bringing the United States into another deadly, protracted armed conflict."

"The Administration's decision to conduct this operation without consultation from Congress and without a specific authorization for the use of military force for Iran is very troubling. Congress must be briefed on the details of the situation immediately, including any plans to deploy additional troops or U.S. resources to the region."
