DeLauro Statement on the U.S. Senate Proposal for Immigration Reform

April 17, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) releasedthe following statement today after the Senate's working group introduced itsbipartisan proposal for comprehensive immigration reform:

"The bill introduced early this morning is an important stepforward in the quest for comprehensive immigration reform. Creating a pathwayto citizenship for the 11 million aspiring citizens already living and workingin Connecticut and across the United States is critical and will make us astronger country.

"I am also pleased the bill takes steps to further secureour borders, an important part of any comprehensive agreement. And it speeds upthe road to citizenship for the DREAMers, students who were brought to thiscountry as children and worked hard to succeed.

"Any legislation must build on our core American values ofequality, opportunity and responsibility. We are one step closer to acting onthose values, but it is just one step. Congress must act swiftly oncomprehensive legislation that makes those core tenants reality."
