DeLauro Statement on White House Action to Help Prevent Evictions

Evicted as a Child, DeLauro Condemns Republican Obstruction

NEW HAVEN – House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement on the Biden Administration's actions to prevent evictions, calls for the use of all available resources to extend the eviction moratorium:

"When I was ten years old, my father's package store went bankrupt, and my parents could no longer pay the rent on our home. I remember coming home one day to find our furniture on the street. Eviction turned our world upside down, and our displacement left lasting scars.

"Eviction is always a tragedy and, compounded by the deadly threat posed by the Delta variant, threatens both the livelihoods and the lives of so many Americans. To protect families in this time of need, we must act to prevent evictions. Unfortunately, shameful Republican obstruction means Congress will not be able to extend the moratorium.

"With respect for the science regarding the threat of the Delta variant, the eviction moratorium must be extended. The announcement from the White House that they are working to find the legal authority for the CDC is a positive first step, but I am eagerly awaiting the outcome of these efforts. With the human costs so high, fear of an adverse court ruling should not prevent this critical step. At the same time, the Treasury Department must continue to ensure that funds allocated by Congress to renters and landlords are effectively and quickly distributed.

"I applaud Connecticut's state and local leaders for their work to support children, families, and individuals facing eviction, and I join President Biden's challenge to landlords to hold off on evictions as they seek Emergency Rental Assistance. I encourage individuals and families in Connecticut to reach out to my office for help accessing available resources."
