DeLauro: Time to Stop Gimmicks, Start Doing what is Best For America
Denounces GOP "Plan D Act"
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) releasedthe following statement today on the House Republicans' gimmicky bill that doesnothing to address the important budgetary and economic issues facing ourcountry. The Senate has already said it will not take up the bill if it passes.
"Instead of trying to stop the looming, across-the-boardspending cuts that will result in job cuts and hamper economic growth,Republicans are pushing yet another gimmicky bill that is destined to die inthe Senate. Week after week they have been wasting time, concerned with howtheir plans come off on camera, not on Main Street. Just yesterday, thePresident again called for a balanced approach to our budget challenges, buthere we are, voting on yet another bill that we already know has no chance ofbecoming law and fails to meet the challenge before us.
"The Republican plan before the House of Representativestoday would do nothing to create jobs, grow the economy or reduce the deficitin a balanced, responsible way. Instead, we are still in a position of lurchingfrom one crisis to the next, threatening the recovery and risking job growth. We saw the results of this strategy just last week, with the news that theeconomy shrunk at the end of last year, due in part to concern about impendingspending cuts. We need to stop wasting time.
"We have 23 days until we are forced to lay off teachersfrom the classrooms they love and turn children away from Head Start. Thisshould not even be a possibility. I urge my Republican colleagues to stop theirgames and start working with Democrats on real solutions for American families.
