DeLauro Urges DREAMers to Renew DACA Status Before Thursday Deadline

October 3, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC (October 3, 2017) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement urging DREAMers to renew their status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program before the deadline on Thursday, October 5, 2017. Last month, the Trump administration announced their decision to end the DACA program.

"I strongly encourage all DREAMers in our 3rd Congressional District and across Connecticut to check on the status of their registration. If you or your loved-ones are currently being protected from deportation by DACA and your benefits expire between September 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018, it is critical that you fill out an application to renew before Thursday."

"Following President Trump's reckless decision to end DACA, I have been working tirelessly to get the DREAM Act passed in the Congress to ensure DREAMers can live without the fear of deportation. These young, undocumented immigrants were brought to the United States through no fault of their own, and ending this program betrays our promise to them. DACA is not a free ride. There are many requirements to qualify, such as entering the U.S. before age 16, continuously living in the U.S. since 2007, not being convicted of felonies or significant misdemeanors, and finishing high school or serving in our armed forces. DREAMers have followed the rules, gone through the entire application process, and been approved to stay in our nation."

"Ending DACA goes against our nation's values and our history of welcoming immigrants to our shores. Congressional Republicans need to step up immediately and work with Democrats on legislation that permanently protects DREAMers."

All physical applications should be placed in the mail today to ensure they are received before Thursday's deadline. For more information about renewing your DACA benefits and eligibility, visit www.uscis.gov/daca2017 (en Español: www.uscis.gov/es/daca2017) and click on "DACA renewal requests."
