DeLauro on USDA Announcement
Washington, DC- Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement today in reaction to the USDA's announcement that they will issue new compliance guidelines and performance standards for bacteria such as salmonella, campylobacter, and E. coli.
"The USDA's announcement today that they will set performance standards for Campylobacter for the first time is encouraging, as are the revised standards and guidance documents for Salmonella and E. coli O157:H7. The agency believes that these measures may prevent tens of thousands of Americans from becoming sick from their food over the next couple of years. I am encouraged by this news and look forward to the timely implementation of standards that improve the safety of our food. The health risks associated with foodborne bacteria such as Campylobacter and Salmonella necessitate robust safety measures, and I am pleased to see that USDA is taking a step in the right direction."
